Legio I
Terra Avstralis
Cohors I

Ancient Roman Reenactment Group in Australia

Legio I Terra Avstralis Cohors I (Legion 1 of the southern land's first cohort) was levied by our Legatus Legionis (General of the Legion) in 2013 and was The first South Australian Ancient Roman Reenactment Group ever in the Adelaide Region for 6 years.

After some drastic Changes, relocation and a 2 year hiatus, we are reforming as an exclusive group with a conscription system Primarily by invitation.

We Specialize in The portrayal of the Roman Period from the 1st century BC to the 1st Century AD.

This encompasses both the Republican and Imperial Periods of Roman History which includes the years of the most famous Roman, Gaius Julius Caesar.

We also encourage our members to portray both Romans as well as the allies & Enemies of Rome in an effort to create a display of variety and contrast within the context of this period.

We are a not for profit club and any gratuities accrued are invested directly into the group to better improve our displays.

We engage in events for schools and education as well as historical events both

public, such as Medieval Fayres & Renaissance Fayres or on occasion, Cosplay events, as well as Private events for reenactors only

We have also engaged in social events such as hosting or attending inter group get togethers in an effort to encourage exposure to other reenactment groups, their portrayals and periods to further gain an understanding and respect for how other groups conduct themselves.

This in turn allows us to gain more knowledge and understanding of other methodologies and ideals.

We have often engaged in events with other groups both with and outside of our time period in an effort to bolster and support those groups with the intention of ensuring strong bonds of friendship and camaraderie continue and open the opportunities for our members and club to participate in more activities.

We  attempt to immerse ourselves into the portrayed period by utilising resources, materials & Methodologies only available to the culture & time period we portray, in an effort to recreate our portrayal as historically accurately as is practicable.

we also employ what's called "Experimental Archeology" as well, this is a method whereupon we study an artefact or method explained or depicted by scholarly sources and attempt to employ or replicate same in an everyday environment which allows us to better understand and assess the likelihood of such items or methods actually having been used in reality.

Why do we Reenact?

Most of us have a passion for history at some point or have had backgrounds in military or emergency services.

It's the similar sense of camaraderie and belonging that is encouraged by Reenactment as well as sharing a common passion for this particular period and culture or cultures.

We also love gaining the knowledge about our portrayals and being in the unique position of being able to see things very much the way the Romans and their Allies & Enemies saw things from their perspective!.

Being able to share the knowledge we have gained as well as those unique perspectives are something we enjoy sharing with the public as well as educators and their charges.

Being a part of a growing hobby that is intrinsically unique and ultimately interesting which permits us to indulge our inner children on many levels is another large reason many of us do what we do.

We also chose this hobby for the opportunities to meet interesting people, publicly and within our clubs and groups which encourages anyone from any background of any description to partake in the camaraderie that is Reenactment.

Reenactment also encourages being in the outdoors and socializing as well as partaking in the greater outdoors, learning many skills both new and old or even forgotten as well as  inspires exercise and activity no matter the health levels.
